DONATIONS

Injured, sick or orphaned wild birds, mammals and reptiles require food, medical treatment, care and housing; Equipment is needed for rescue, handling, and diagnosis.

Bird species seen include raptors, water and game birds, songbirds, and specialized species such as hummingbirds and poorwills. Mammals include herbivores, carnivores and omnivores such as raccoons, rabbits, hares, and squirrels.

Feeding such a variety of animals requires a wide range of foods: live foods such as mealworms, crickets, crayfish, fish, rodents; nectar; thistle, sunflower, and other seeds; dry dog food, eggs, vegetables, and fruit. Specialized formulas and supplements are also provided when needed.

Treatment can require: fluids, medications, needles and syringes, catheters, bandaging and splint materials, veterinary care, vaccines, and more. Laboratory equipment helps us to determine blood values, degrees of emaciation, and the causes of some illnesses.

Care includes: bedding, food and water dishes, paper towels and Kleenex, cleaning materials, hoses, fans, air purifiers, misting systems.

Rescue and handling call for: nets, carriers, gloves, protective eyewear, pole syringes,
raptor hoods, catchpoles and squeeze cages.

Housing includes: incubators, small baskets and cages for babies, carriers, large cages; pens and aviaries that meet the mandated size requirements for both birds and mammals being rehabilitated.

Fly Away Program

"A few coins a day will help me fly away" is the slogan for Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care's new fundraising program.  Attractive "Fly Away" coin cannisters make it easy for individuals to support the wildlife rehabilitation work of this tax-exempt, volunteer-based organization. Help me fly away!

You can call Cindy at 872-1487 and arrange to take home a can to fill with your spare coins. Bishop area participants can drop off their filled cannisters at Curves, 1180 N. Main St. (next to Smart and Final) or call 872-8783 to schedule a pickup. Drop off cans to Sound Shoppe in Mammoth.

All proceeds from the "Fly Away" program go to the care and feeding of orphaned and injured wild birds and mammals.

SINCE 1998, EASTERN SIERRA WILDLIFE CARE HAS ADMITTED AND PROVIDED CARE FOR OVER 4,500 WILD BIRDS, MAMMALS AND REPTILES. WE’VE HELPED THOUSANDS MORE THROUGH OUR “LIVING WITH WILDLIFE” COUNSELING.

We rescue animals from roadsides and backyards, ponds, reservoirs, and canals, buildings and culverts. Patients come from Topaz and Walker Lake, Tonopah in the east and Yosemite in the west, from the Owens Dry Lake and Little Lake in the south. They come from high elevations (a Burrowing Owl was found at 10,000’ on Mammoth Mountain one winter!) and low; the come in the winter, summer, spring and fall. WHY DO WE DO IT? Because we care; because most patients come to us as the result of negative impacts with humans and human-related activities; because without our help they would die. Why do we do it? BECAUSE YOU CARE. You are the people who rescue most of the animals; you are the people who pick up nests of baby birds after a high wind; you are the people who report an injured eagle or pelican on the roadside; and you are the people who open your hearts to these animals in danger and distress. HOW DO WE DO IT? WE DO IT WITH YOUR HELP. We do it with people—people from Mammoth and June, Crowley and Chalfant, Big Pine and Bishop—caring people who feed baby birds and mammals, transport patients to other care facilities for special care, build cages, put on our annual events. We do it with caring people and businesses throughout the Eastern Sierra who give monetary support—support that buys food, medicine and care supplies and pays for gas, lumber, phones and heat. WE DO IT TOGETHER! The people of the Eastern Sierra and Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care, working together, provide help and healing for wildlife in need. Spring is here. You’ve probably noticed. Fruit trees are in blossom, wildflowers dot the desert, the sun is warmer, and—Red-tailed Hawks, Ravens and Great Horned Owls are sitting on their nests, baby cottontails are snuggling in their burrows (three cottontail babies are at ESWC instead; their nest was destroyed), and early songbirds are courting or carrying dried grasses to nesting spots. At Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care, we’re cleaning, mending, repairing, and laying in supplies. We’re getting our “nest” ready for the hundreds of baby birds and mammals that you will rescue, that you will bring to us for care.

And we’re turning to you once again; we’re asking you to give generously to Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care so that we can promise to be here when you—our community—need us; so that we can give our patients the best possible care; so that you and the animals can count on us! Thank you for caring about wildlife. Cindy Kamler, Director
